MECC Health Curriculum

Comprehensive Health Education

Manning Early Childhood Center teachers use the South Carolina state Health and Safety Education Curriculum Guidelines, Standards and Performance Indicators to implement our Comprehensive Health Education.  Teachers use the lessons, activity ideas, and assessments suggested in the state curriculum guide.  Every class receives this health instruction through units integrated within our English Language Arts block.  This instruction equates to 5 hours per week for 9 weeks during the school year.  The Curriculum can be accessed through the following link.

In addition to the activities outlined in the curriculum guide, teachers have access to a variety of texts that can be utilized to supplement the above curriculum.  A list of these texts can be found at this link.

Teachers also utilize a nutrition curriculum, Discover My Plate, which includes six lessons on healthy food choices and active lifestyles.  Lessons are extended through resources obtained from the USDA Food and Nutrition Service.  Students also participate in learning from a variety of guest speakers, such as nurse and dental clinic workers, food service directors, and speakers on career days, to support the Comprehensive Health Standards.  Teachers use these to enhance the health education program for nine weeks of the school year.

Manning Early Childhood Center has a school-wide health initiative.
