Turbeville, SC — On August 6, 2025, the Clarendon County School District proudly unveiled the new Walker Gamble Elementary School with a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by students, staff, and community members. This state-of-the-art facility represents the district’s commitment to providing a modern, innovative learning environment. It features significant design improvements, such as energy-efficient systems and enhanced natural lighting, creating flexible learning spaces that adapt to various teaching methods. The integration of advanced technology further supports interactive and immersive educational experiences.

The new facility includes 30 classrooms, with the capacity to accommodate up to 750 students. In addition to traditional classrooms, the school boasts specialized spaces such as STEM labs, art rooms, and a spacious media center. An outdoor learning environment has been designed to encourage exploration and creativity, offering students unique opportunities to engage with their surroundings. These additions serve to enrich the educational experience and nurture a sense of curiosity and innovation among students.

Ensuring safety and security was a priority in the design of the new building. It includes state-of-the-art safety measures, such as controlled access points and advanced surveillance systems, along with enhanced emergency response features. These upgrades ensure that students and staff can learn and work in a secure environment, providing peace of mind to parents and the community. The district remains committed to fostering a safe, supportive space for education.

Dr. Shawn Johnson, Superintendent, expressed his excitement about the new school, stating, “Walker Gamble Elementary School exemplifies our district’s unwavering commitment to offering an exceptional learning environment for our students. This school is built to inspire innovation, promote growth, and prepare our children for a successful future. We are proud to see our vision realized, and we extend our gratitude to the Honorable Kevin L. Johnson and Kimberly O. Johnson for their vital roles in securing the approval and funding to make this a reality.”

The response from the community has been overwhelmingly positive. Teachers have expressed excitement about the possibilities the new facility offers, while students are eager to explore their new learning environments. Parents appreciate the district’s investment in high-quality education, recognizing the opportunities these changes provide for their children. The old Walker Gamble building will continue to be a staple, historic building, and emergency shelter for now, further enriching the resources available to local residents.

This investment is a testament to the district’s and the state’s dedication to fostering a forward-thinking, inclusive educational environment. The new Walker Gamble Elementary School is a stepping stone toward preparing students for the future and cultivating a community where opportunities for success abound.

“By investing in our schools, we are investing in the future of our community, creating chances for every child to succeed,” stated Dr. Johnson.
